Here’s another curious tale at Jiipii-tei.
---
Hattsu-an: "Goinkyo, I heard about this... um... Big Mac! It’s something big, right? Maybe a giant rice ball?"
Goinkyo: "Big Mac, you say? That’s a bit of a leap, Hattsu-an. There's no ‘Big Mac’ in Edo, but if it’s big you want, why not make a double-layered norimaki?"
Hattsu-an: "Ah, double-layered! So, like two rice balls stacked on top of each other? With pickles in the middle, maybe some soy sauce?"
Goinkyo: "Not quite, but close. Think more like layers of rice, maybe some grilled eel or egg between them, all wrapped up in seaweed. It’s our own Edo-style ‘Big Mac’ - a big, hearty norimaki roll."
Hattsu-an: "Got it! So rice, eel, egg, and seaweed... Maybe I’ll even add two layers of eel for extra 'big'!"
Goinkyo: "If you can manage to eat it in one bite, that’s your challenge. Now, no fancy buns, but I promise it’ll fill you up just like this ‘Big Mac’ you’re imagining."
Hattsu-an: "I bet it will! Edo’s own Big Mac, and no cows involved!"
---
(There comes Detchi, the shop apprentice, rushing in.)
Detchi: "So here’s how you make Edo’s Big Mac?"
- Cooked rice
- Grilled unagi (eel) or tamagoyaki (sweet omelet)
- Nori seaweed sheets
- Pickled vegetables (optional)
- Soy sauce for seasoning
- Spread rice on a sheet of nori.
- Add a layer of grilled eel or egg in the center.
- Top with more rice and roll tightly.
- Slice into thick pieces and serve.
---
Hattsu-an: "I’ll call it the ‘Big Maki’ - two bites for the brave!"
